Experiencing California’s Epic ‘Sunset Savor the Central Coast’ Food + Wine Festival

Join Vagabondish on Twitter and Facebook.

I’d never visited San Luis Obispo before. As an ignorant East Coaster, this area between San Francisco and L.A. was a no-man’s land to me — a vast, yet-to-be-explored swath of Pacific Coast highway dotted with nameless small towns, hippie surfer hangouts, and maybe a few vineyards. As it turns out, this is how many […]

Towers of Svaneti in Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, Georgia

Towers of Svaneti

Life was never easy in high Caucasus. Nomads from northern steppes eager to get their hands on the riches of Mesopotamia, and Empires battling for supremacy — Assyrians, Macedonians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Turks, and Mongols — all clashed with fearless locals. The list of invading armies is nearly endless.

Svans — a subgroup of Georgians, who speak their own unwritten Svan language, practice blood revenge, and sing complicated polyphonic vocal songs — were the traditional gatekeepers of mountain passes, and since the time immemorial have been hardy survivors, the archetypal highland warriors. Every household in Svaneti is a true fortress. Villages in these rugged landscape are often too scattered to be encircled with a protective wall. Each individual house thus had to be separately fortified.

The tower homes of Svaneti were at the same time familial living quarters, fortified fortresses of defense, and personal treasuries. They offered protection to their owners and to their livestock, and also served as shelters for the most valuable possessions of every family, as well as copies of holy scriptures and religious icons and relics. Most of the towers date back to the period between 9th and 12th century.

The turbulent history of the region ensured that these fortifications remained in use long after similar defenses become redundant elsewhere in Europe. In recent times families have slowly begun moving out into more comfortable living spaces. However, many of Svan towers still remain in use, and the village of Chazhashi boasts as many as 200.

The similar dwellings can be found in a much wider area all over Caucasus. However, the typical Svaneti towers are concentrated in Mestia district, 128 km northeast of the regional capital of Zugdidi. Anyone wishing to see the towers should head to the remote village of Ushguli.

With elevation of 2086m Ushguni is one of the highest inhabited places in Europe. According to local lore, in Middle Ages it served as a summer retreat for fabled Queen Tamar. Since 1996, the traditional towers of upper Svaneti have been protected as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Flintstone House in Hillsborough, California

The Flintstone House

Drivers heading north to San Francisco on Interstate 280 will notice a peculiar home just east of the Eugene A. Doran Memorial Bridge. The house, playfully nicknamed by Bay Area residents as The Flintstone House is actually an experimental house built in 1976, with rooms in which every surface is rounded. Beneath its burnt orange (originally white) coat of paint is a slew of cement, rebar, plaster putty, wire mesh and aeronautical balloons.

The house looks somewhat like a series of inflated balloons, which makes sense, as this was how it was constructed. Steel rebar and wire mesh frames were constructed over large inflated balloons and then sprayed with high velocity concrete known as gunite or "shotcrete."

This building technique, known as "monolithic dome construction" was invented by the South brothers in Shelly, Idaho in 1975. One year later, Bay Area architect William Nicholson built a series of domes using this method, including The Flintstone House in Hillsborough, California.

The home, which is also referred to as the Dome House, Gumby House, and Bubble House, is a three-bedroom, two-bath house with a two-car garage and about 2,700 square feet of living space. The upstairs bedroom, located in the tallest dome, has a spiral staircase inspired by a sugar-cone with a diameter that increases to equal that of the floor above. The master bathroom is also unique with its scattering of large rocks in place of floor tiles.

While The Flintstone House is marveled at by many passerby, it is also loathed by many Hillsborough residents. In the mid-1980s the home began to show serious wear as water runoff on the steep hillside caused the home to sink and the walls began to develop deep cracks. Word spread of such problems and several neighbors pushed to have the home removed. However, to their dismay, a severe renovation and change in ownership brought the home back to life in 1987. It took on its characteristic "Flintstone" look when it was painted completely orange in 2000.

Today, The Flintstone House is as well known for its architecture as it is for its sporadic tenants, which has led to several urban legends surrounding the home's ownership. It is rumored that George Lucas once owned the house and that O.J. Simpson made a bid following his infamous 1995 trial. It is also said that several famous Sillicon Valley investors have lived there as well.

Regardless of ownership and neighborhood complaints, The Flintstone House remains standing. Overlooking the freeway and reservoir, it continues to serve as an unofficial California landmark and lighthearted reminder of the Bay Area’s forward, yet sometimes quirky, thinking.

Act Now: Redeem American Miles For Business Class To Europe!

Over the past few weeks, American has announced four new routes between the US and Europe, which will launch in the spring of 2015. These include the following flights:

A second daily Boeing 777-300ER flight between Los Angeles and London as of March 28, 2015

-- A daily Boeing 757-200 flight between New York and Birmingham as of May 7, 2015

-- A daily Boeing 757-200 flight between New York and Edinburgh as of May 7, 2015

-- A daily Boeing 767-300 flight between Miami and Frankfurt as of May 14, 2015

Yesterday these flights finally became bookable, and as is the norm for American, premium cabin awards space was pretty tough to come by... at least initially.

All four routes didn't have a single saver business class award seat available, though did have plenty of saver economy award seats available.

Falling in Love with the Land of Elves

As we stared up at the sky, patches of neon and dark green changed to light pink and back to green. They came out of nowhere, hung like curtains on invisible hangers, and danced a duet to an unheard symphony They would appear, vanish, and reappear all over the sky. My companions, Lulu and Germaine, (two friends from France spending the week driving around Iceland) and I stared, bewildered, as the northern lights danced above us. It was the first […]

China Eastern 777-300ER To Los Angeles Starting February 2015

China Eastern doesn't historically have a very good reputation, in particular for their first and business class products available on their longhaul fleet. Their Airbus A340-600 aircraft, which they fly on 14+ hour flights, are downright nasty compared to what the competition is offering. On the plus side, their A330-200 aircraft are a bit better, as they do feature fully flat seats.

Back in September I wrote about China Eastern's brand new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which look stunning.

Here's a video of the cabins on the new 777-300ER.
