One Of The Airline Industry’s Greatest Mysteries

I just wrapped up a sub-48 hour trip to Germany, during which I got very little sleep. While dragging myself out of bed and to the airport this morning at an ungodly hour I walked through my hotel's lobby and for a second thought I was in the airport's lost luggage department. There were about two dozen massive suitcases, and then two dozen rollaboard suitcases, all neatly lined up.

I looked up and saw a crew from a major Asian airline. An airline where crews just have a 1-2 night layover and then turn right around. And it got me wondering, what the hell does each crew member do with two suitcases for such a short trip?!

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the system that non-US airlines have. At US airlines, flight attendants carry on all their bags, and many times they have a handful of bags each which look more like an RV than a carry-on. And that's frustrating, since in many cases they're competing with passengers for limited overhead bin space.

The Most Dangerous Game: Many Spends

I’ve been playing the game of many spends for years now. I can remember walking into a grocery store and buying a money order with my credit card years ago. It was an easy game back then because if the transaction went through, you immediately had easily disposable U.S. currency in the form of a […]

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Awards Become More Restrictive

Via Head for Points, Virgin Atlantic has quietly updated their change and cancellation policy. Going forward, if you've redeemed Flying Club miles for an award, you won't receive a refund of your miles if you cancel within 7 days of the flight.

The Virgin Atlantic website now reflects the following terms [emphasis mine]:

"Once tickets for a Reward Booking are issued, no name changes are allowed. If for any reason a flight Reward is cancelled by the Member outside 7 days of departure, 100% of the Miles will be re-credited to the Member’s account. A cancellation fee of £30 for changes to flights originating in the UK, US$50 for changes to flights originating in the US or local currency equivalent of US$50 for changes to flights originating in any other region will apply

If for any reason a flight Reward is cancelled by a member within 7 days prior to departure, no Miles will be refunded and a £30 administration fee will be charged to process the refund of any taxes, charges/surcharges. If you change the original travel date (within 7 days of departure) and later decide to cancel your flights, you will forfeit the mileage used for the Reward. Once travel has commenced Miles cannot be refunded."

Alaska And Virgin Australia Awards Bookable On Delta.com Again

Delta made a pretty major change to the SkyMiles program last week, whereby they no longer priced stopovers on award tickets. This didn't just apply on delta.com, but also for reservations made by phone.

Delta quickly clarified that this was as a result of changes to the IT of Delta SkyMiles, clearly in preparation for the 2015 SkyMiles program. While Delta will be introducing one-way awards in 2015, I think it's safe to assume they'll come at the expense of stopovers on roundtrip awards.

Delta claimed that award stopovers could still be priced by calling Delta reservations agents, though that wasn't entirely true. Unless you specifically ask an agent for a stopover, they know about the "glitch," and they manually price it, they'll charge you extra for stopovers. It's fascinating when an airline's policy is that they'll charge you the wrong price unless you know to call them out on it... but that's an entirely different story.

Anyway, there were two other seemingly innocent changes -- delta.com stopped displaying award availability for travel on Alaska Airlines and Virgin Australia. I gave them the benefit of the doubt on that one, though it was a bit odd that delta.com stopped displaying space for both partners around the same time. I spoke to someone at Delta who explained it was an IT glitch. An actual IT glitch, unlike the change with stopovers.

Emirates Adds Third Daily A380 Flight To New York JFK

Wow! Emirates is going "all in" on New York, as they're adding a third daily A380 flight between Dubai and New York JFK as of March 8, 2015. This is in addition to their daily 777-300ER flight, which operates via Milan.

The new frequency will operate with the following schedule:

EK207 Dubai to New York departing 2:50PM arriving 8:35PM

EK208 New York to Dubai departing 4:30PM arriving 1:15PM (+1 day)

On first glance that doesn't make sense, given the "negative" ground time in New York, though they're accomplishing this by tightening up their overall schedule in New York.
