Uber’s $30 First Time Rider Credit Ends November 23

Readers know that I’m a big fan of Uber, the on-demand car service. You download an app to your phone, request a pickup with the press of a button. You watch your vehicle on a map as it drives to you and shows you how many minutes away the car is. You can stay inside […]

Asiana Faces 45 Day Suspension At San Francisco Airport

I'm sure we all remember last year's crash of Asiana 214 between Seoul Incheon and San Francisco, which touched down short of the runway, causing both death and serious injuries.

In June the NTSB concluded that pilot error was the main cause of the accident.

Aside from the overall damage this does to the airline (reputation, lawsuits, insurance claims, etc.), how is Asiana being "punished" for the accident? Well, apparently by being issued a 45 day suspension on their route between Seoul and San Francisco:

United Eliminating Checked Bags On Separate Tickets Outside Star Alliance

Typically when you’re booked on separate tickets you can still check your bags all the way through to your final destination by presenting your e-ticket receipt at check-in. Exact policies differ by airline — some airlines will let you check through bags from virtually all carriers, while others (like Southwest) won’t let you check through bags from any other carriers.

Per a memo sent to travel agents, United will be tightening up their policies for checked bags on separate tickets. Beginning on March 1, 2015, it will no longer be possible to check bags through from an United flight to a separate ticket on another airline, with a few exceptions.

United Devalues… Checked Baggage

Via Hans Mast United has copied another customer-unfriendly policy developed elsewhere at other carriers. They’re going to stop checking baggage through to your final destination when you’re traveling on separate tickets and your connection is on an airline outside the Star Alliance. Here instead of immediately following what Delta does by doing the exact same […]

More Information On 10 Year China Visa For Americans

Earlier in the week I wrote about how the US and China have announced a new, reciprocal 10 year visa policy for tourists and business travelers. This is obviously fantastic news, given that previously US travelers could get at most a one year visa for travel to China.

The change was supposed to kick in on Wednesday, November 12, 2014, though as is usually the case with bureaucracy, there seems to be a lot of misinformation, and it also takes time for policies to spread. Obviously there are lots of questions about how the process will work in practice, and up until now we've had limited answers.

The United States of America-China Chamber of Commerce posted some useful information about how the 10 year visa program will work:
