How Do Airlines Compensate Each Other For Taking Passengers During Irregular Operations?

Reader Jered wants to know: How do airline awards work when redeeming points for travel on a partners? How much if anything do they compensate each other for award seats? More broadly, “when I am accommodated on another airline, how does that work behind the scenes?” e.g. “[D]istressed United passengers on the BOS-ICN mistake fare […]

Hotel Pulitzer Leaving Starwood April 1, 2015

A few months back I stayed at Hotel Pulitzer, which is a Starwood Luxury Collection property in Amsterdam.

It's an incredibly unique property, for better or worse -- so unique that no two rooms are the same.

On one hand the hotel is a bit shabby chic, as it's no doubt past its prime. On the other hand, it's so nice to get all the benefits you grow accustomed to with loyalty programs without getting the typical "cookie cutter" hotel.

Anyway, color me surprised -- Hotel Pulitzer will be leaving Starwood as of April 1, 2015. Per a message posted on the hotel's website:

I accept that I usually have to give up on my hope of no one sitting next to me on a plane. I just don't want to give up my precious, optimally chosen, designated seat.

Has American Stopped Releasing International Saver Award Space?

I would mark this as "developing" for the time being, and wouldn't draw any conclusions just yet.

There's no doubt that there has been a trend the past several years whereby American is releasing less and less saver award space, particularly in premium cabins on international routes. Back in the day American had an amazing amount of saver level award space on their own flights, unlike any other US airline.

But over the years the trend has slowly been going in the opposite direction, to the point that booking a saver level premium cabin award seat between the US and Europe on American metal in advance is almost impossible. For me the ultimate example of this was several weeks back when I was looking to fly between London and New York. I was trying to book a first class award day of departure when not a single first class seat was taken on two flights, yet they still weren't releasing saver award space.

That being said, economy saver award space has generally been quite good, at least up until now.
