Fuel Rewards Signup Bonus, United Upgrade Changes, and Miles and Points Goes Mainstream

News and notes from around the interweb: Mommy Points was back on ABC’s Nightline this time helping a family leverage their everyday activities to earn points. It was like a reality show, Kitchen Nightmares where Gordon Ramsey does a makeover of a restaurant, Summer drives up to a home and gives a miles and points […]

Great Deal: $100 Off Two Night Orbitz Hotel Reservation

On Cyber Monday I wrote about the amazing deal Orbitz was offering, whereby you could receive $100 off a hotel stay when using Visa Checkout. The promotion was gone within hours.

Well, the promotion appears to be live again, with the caveat that it's only valid on hotel stays of two nights or more.

As I explained last time, the promotion is valid when you book a qualifying, two night stay at a standalone hotel for a stay between now and June 30, 2015. You must use Visa Checkout as the method of payment, and use promotion code VISACHECKOUT. Using Visa Checkout is pretty easy, so that requirement shouldn’t be a limiting factor for anyone.

The Belief That Career Success Can Make Us Happy Is the Central Illusion of Our Time

From David Brooks in the Times — “The real contradiction of capitalism is that it arouses enormous ambition, but it doesn’t help you define where you should focus it. It doesn’t define an end to which you should devote your life. It nurtures the illusion that career and economic success can lead to fulfillment, which…

What Hitchhiking Alone as Female in China Taught Me Hospitality

On the second Wednesday of the month, Kristin Addis from Be My Travel Muse writes a guest column featuring tips and advice on solo female travel. It’s an important topic I can’t cover so I brought in an expert to share her advice. This is her column this month. It was February in China and, with the town of Lijiang’s elevation in Yunnan province, still very much a cold winter wonderland. Standing outside waiting wasn’t how I wanted to spend […]

Cities Less Traveled: A First-time Tourist’s Historic Guide to Cambridge, Massachusetts

Join Vagabondish on Twitter and Facebook.

If Boston is Massachusetts’ big, bold, boisterous son, Cambridge is its hip, intellectual, slightly more aloof brother. As New England cities go, Cambridge doesn’t garner the same travel coverage as Boston or even Providence, Rhode Island for that matter. But it should and here are five must-see experiences to illustrate why. The Widener Library at […]

Singapore Reverses Course, Agrees to Honor Mistake Fare

Last week I reported that Singapore Airlines was refusing to honor a business class mistake fare between Sydney and London. It wasn’t a cheap fare — about US$3000 roundtrip — but apparently intended as an economy rather than a business class fare. There are varying reports of between 400 and 900 tickets purchased. And after […]
