Tips For Joining The Mile High Club?

I receive a ton of emails. Some of them are great questions, some of them are questions that could easily be figured out with two seconds of Googling, and then there are those kinds of questions. This past week a reader sent me the following question:

"Here's a pretty real question (and a killer blog post if you have an answer), anyway for us to join the mile high club without losing respect of all crew members? Haha I'm imagining your face palm right now but... If anyone has a thought it'd be you. I know some of the seats allow two people to open their area into one sort of semi suite or if they have showers I thought that could be an option, albeit a little tough but " we'll make it fit" hahaha, couldn't help myself there."

I'm not sure whether to be flattered or offended at the prospect of someone thinking I'd be the person to have thoughts on it. The good news is that I certainly do have thoughts on it. The bad news is that I have thoughts on it because I'm a germaphobe, and the thought of someone screwing in the seats I'm sitting in is enough to make me barf.

Review: Westin Singapore

I was really excited to check out the new Westin Singapore, given that it just opened about a year ago.

I find Singapore to be a hotel market that's well past its prime, so a hotel scores huge points just for being new, in my opinion.

For our one night stay I had the option between paying 580SGD (~465USD) or 16,000 Starpoints for a base room at the Westin. 580SGD for a night is crazy, so I obviously redeemed the Starpoints, a redemption value I was quite happy with. The revenue rate actually made me really curious about the quality of this property, since the price was even higher than the St. Regis the night prior.

We took a taxi from the St. Regis to the Westin, which took about 15 minutes. The Westin is located near the financial district, and is actually in the brand new Asia Square Tower. The hotel uses levels 32 to 46 of the building, which is otherwise occupied by office space. The first thing I noticed is that while the Westin is near the financial district, it's quite removed from everything. The building kind of occupies its own plot of land, so it's a good 10 minute walk until you're in the financial district, or anywhere else for that matter.

SPG Amex Annual Stay And Night Credit Benefit

I'm primarily loyal to two hotel chains -- Starwood Preferred Guest and Hyatt Gold Passport. I've had top tier status with both chains for several years now, even before I lived in hotels full time. While neither chain has the global footprint of Hilton, IHG, or Marriott, I find that they have significantly better elite benefits than the competition.

Before I lived in hotels full time it was a real struggle to qualify for top tier status with both chains, though. Each requires 50 nights for top tier status, so that's a 100 nights in hotels, between the two brands.
