Free In-Room Hotel Coffee: A Right Or Privilege?

I'm rarely in one timezone for more than a few days, so I'm often asked how I deal with jetlag. The answer is coffee. Lots and lots and lots of coffee. All day. Every day.

That's why I write quite a bit about hotel coffee. When you're jetlagged and constantly in different timezones, you notice the oddities of how different hotels approach coffee.

Some hotels offer crap in-room coffee.

Some offer good in-room coffee.

And some offer coffee in the lobby.

Hacking My Way into an Airport Lounge for Free

Leaving Mobile, Alabama I decided to visit the Mobile Airport Authority Executive Lounge. That’s one readers of my lounge reviews might not have been expecting. Of course, I didn’t even realize that the Mobile, Alabama airport had a lounge. Let alone that it’s free, if you know how to access it. This is an airport-run […]

EVA Air 747 Retirement Video

Airlines are slowly retiring the gas-guzzling queen of the skies, the Boeing 747 (the pretty ones are always the thirstiest, eh?).

As an aviation geek it's tough to not get at least a little bit sentimental about it. Many of us grew up flying the 747 and associate many of our first longhaul journeys with the plane, so seeing them slowly scrapped and dumped in the desert is like losing an old friend.

The only good thing about 747 retirement is that we seem to get a cool "farewell" video from each airline whenever it happens.

Most recently, EVA Air has posted a 747-400 farewell video on YouTube:

Natives in the Hot Afternoon Namibian Sun

What I think About Bird Photos I recently gave this fairly useless critique to Cat Burton inside the Arcanum. Below this quote, I put one of my own photos, which I do not really think of as a bird-photo, but as a weird-photo. It’s a good photo. Here’s my somewhat useless analysis, being a non-bird-photographer. […]

When Frequent Flyer Fraud Units Go Off the Rails

I’ve written before about how to deal with the ‘worst case scenario’ of having your frequent flyer account locked for suspected fraud. There are times, though, that even I’m vexed. Airlines and hotel programs see ‘loyalty program fraud’ as a bigger issue than ever before — whether it’s simply breaking the rules of a program […]

Larry David Chimes In On Living In Hotels

I find Larry David to be one of the funniest guys out there, and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" is possibly my favorite sitcom of all times.

Larry David was on Letterman recently to discuss his new gig on Broadway. He's living in hotels during that time, and has some pretty funny commentary on it. Check it out:

Airlines Are Really Financial Trading Firms Taking Big Risks in Commodities Markets

Modern airlines are really transportation system, and part financial trading firm. And sometimes they’re more of the latter than the former. Since fuel is a huge part of the cost structure of an airline, and one that’s highly variable, one can make the case for locking in a price. But that’s another way of saying […]

Which Airlines Offer the Coolest Amenity Kits?

There are a lot of ways in which airlines try to outdo one another. One of these is via amenity kits offered to premium cabin passengers on long-haul flights, even if it is hard to envision anyone ever opting to fly with a particular airline simply because of an amenity kit. The first amenity kits […]
