Weekly Review: January 24, 2015

Hello from sunny Florida! I’ve spent the past five days at home with my parents (not living in hotels, for once), and it has actually been kind of relaxing.

I’ve been getting sleep. I’ve been going to the gym. My mom has cooked.

As much as I love to travel, it's really, really, nice to slow down for a while.

Here’s American’s First Boeing 787 — They’ve Now Owned Every Single Boeing Jet

American took delivery of its first Boeing 787 on Thursday, and flew it to Dallas on Friday. They have 42 firm orders for the 787-8 and 787-9 and options on an additional 58 planes. We’ll see the aircraft flying between domestic hubs for a few weeks when the aircraft first goes into revenue service during […]

Are Japanese Flight Attendants Sleeping With Pilots For Money?

The Daily Mail, the pinnacle of reputable journalism, ran a story this week about how many Japanese flight attendants are apparently turning to prostitution to make up for wage cuts. Apparently their wages have been cut from £28,000 per year in 2004 to £22,000 per year in 2013.

Their prostitution clients? Pilots, apparently:

"Several unnamed flight attendants have been quoted in the Shukan Post claiming that female cabin crew are regularly paid to sleep with the pilots.

According to the women, staff can charge between £300 and £450 for 90 minutes with a client."

Mattress Running With Club Carlson’s Current Promotion

For those of you that aren't familiar with the term "mattress running," it's when you stay at a hotel exclusively for the purpose of earning points and/or stay credits. It's the hotel equivalent of "mileage running," which is flying for the sole purpose of accumulating airline miles.

Back in the day mattress running was a thing that actually made sense. For example, Hyatt used to offer "Faster Free Nights," whereby you'd earn one free night at any hotel in the world after two paid stays. So you'd make two stays at your local sub-$100 per night Hyatt, and then redeem your free night at a property like the Park Hyatt Sydney, which retails for $800+ per night. It was a crazy good deal, though not surprisingly we haven't seen that promotion in a couple of years.

Anyway, Club Carlson's current promotion is the most I've been tempted to mattress run since the good old Faster Free Night days (admittedly free nights at Club Carlson properties aren't nearly as aspirational as free nights at Park Hyatt properties, but...). Travis is using the promotion to get more value out of hotel stays he'd make anyway, while I'm tempted to use the promotion just to earn points...

Here’s How You Can Protect Your Frequent Flyer Accounts from Hackers

Starwood got hacked. This came shortly after American, United, and Hilton got hacked. Points are advertised for sale cheap online. There’s no way to be perfectly secure, and programs don’t often admit what’s really going on […]

Best Seats In Cathay Pacific First Class

Cathay Pacific offers one of the all around most solid first class products, in my opinion. I don't think they're necessarily the best in any one area, but they're one of the airlines that's truly "solid" all around from the seat to the service to the food to the bedding to the entertainment to their lounges.

Back in the day a majority of Cathay Pacific's longhaul fleet consisted of 747s, though over time they've retired 747s to the point that it's mostly just 777s they're flying longhaul.

And only a subfleet of those 777s feature a first class cabin.

So, what are the best seats in Cathay Pacific's 777 first class?
