The “Crisis Text Line” Helps Thousands of Young People Each Day

The Crisis Text Line provides free support and “active listening" for teens through the method of communication that many people now prefer. Volunteers are available around the clock and communicate with thousands of users in need every day.
The organization’s quantified approach, based on five million texts, has produced a unique collection of mental-health data. C.T.L. has found that depression peaks at 8pm, anxiety at 11pm, self-harm at 4am, and substance abuse at 5am.

Counselors are trained to put texters at ease and not to jump too quickly into a problem-solving mode. Open-ended questions are good; “why” questions are bad. Also bad: making assumptions about the texter’s gender or sexual orientation, sounding like a robot, using language that a young person might not know.

If you need help, you can reach the Crisis Text Line by texting START to 741741.

TPG reader Todd emailed me to ask: “Can I earn American Airline EQMs or points by booking tickets for others? I may have occasions where I purchase tickets for my wife and son, and want to maximize my EQMs/points if possible.” Todd, your wife and son will always earn the Elite Qualifying Miles (EQMs) for...

What Are the Best Excursions in Princeville, Kauai, Hawaii?

TPG reader Matt tweeted me to ask: @thepointsguy – “I’m going to Princeville in Kauai, Hawaii in May! What excursions do you recommend?” I just got back from an incredible trip to Kauai, and I know how excited Matt must be for his trip. I’ve been to Princeville twice now, three years ago in February,...

Tenba Switch 10 Mirrorless Camera Bag for Travelers [First Look]

Join Vagabondish on Twitter and Facebook.

Mirrorless (micro 4/3 format) digital cameras have been around for a while now. But, until recently, surprisingly few camera bags have been available for the new format. Tenba — one of my favorite camera accessory manufacturers — has released their latest Switch series of pro bags specifically designed for the new format cameras. They were […]

New Debit Card You Can Order Free Online and Load With a Credit Card

There’s a discussion on Flyertalk about several prepaid debit products that you can buy online (free, with free shipping) and that you can then load online with a credit card. They’re branded cards issued by Metabank for Boys & Girls Clubs of Deleware, Goodwill Deleware, and others. (These groups don’t manage the cards, they just […]

Going to Skipper’s Canyon with Cliff and Cher

Any cool Meditation Apps? I don’t know if any of you all are into meditation or not, but I found a few interesting apps around these topics. One is called “Calm” and the other is called “Buddhify” — both pretty interesting, but I thought you might know of some too! Daily Photo – Going to […]

OUCH: American Fails to Load Bags at Miami for 8 Hours, Doesn’t Tell Passengers

Readers of this blog know that I’m generally a fan of American Airlines, I fly over 100,000 miles a year with them and I think the AAdvantage program is the most rewarding airline frequent flyer program at least at the top elite tier. Every once in awhile though an airline does something that reminds you […]

Is It The End of Loyalty, Time For Everyone For Themselves?

At the beginning of the year I wrote The State of Frequent Flyer Miles in 2015. Award charts are more expensive. Miles are easier to earn. The products we cna redeem for are better than ever. The economy and travel business are relatively good which makes programs less generous with us. And they’ve gotten smarter, […]

Weekly Review: February 21, 2015

Hello from Florida! February -- or for that matter this whole year -- has been crazy for me on the travel front. Last weekend I flew to Jakarta, and after a brief stop in New York I caught a cold (which is rare, because I'd like to think I have the immune system of a horse for all that recirculated air in my system). ;) I canceled my travel plans and headed down to Florida, where it's much warmer.

Goodness, I think my greatest luxury in life may be the ability to escape cold weather. I don't know how some of you do it. It's looking much nicer here in Florida today, where it's 70 degrees and sunny.

How Much Food Can You Order In First Class?

I'd like to think I eat a lot when I fly (I mean, I'd rather not think that, but I'm just being honest with myself). I'd rather not think how many hours I have to spend on a treadmill to burn off what I eat and drink on a longhaul flight on a premium airline in first class.

For that matter, I tend to think that airlines serve too much food in premium cabins, if anything. Like, look at a domestic American first class lunch, for example. You get hot nuts, salad, chicken or ravioli, and a hot cookie. It's terrifying to think how many calories that has.

Interestingly I'm still often asked if it's possible to order more food. I don't think I've ever been hungry in international first class. I've maybe a couple of times ordered seconds of caviar, etc., and then skipped another course. But I've never gone beyond that.
