19 signs you're from Chicago

1. You know what “Lake Effect” means. Bundle up, that’s what. 2. You’ll always think Channel 11 is the best public access channel ever. You learned to cook with the Frugal Gourmet, listened to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and first fell in love with Siskel & Ebert and their movie reviews watching WTTW. 3. You […]

A Film About Shame and Ego Wins Best Picture at the Oscars

Two days ago I went to see Birdman. I’d missed it when it came out, then forgot all about it, then realized it was still showing. Last night it won best picture and many other awards at the Oscars—coincidence, I’m sure. :)I really liked many aspects of the film, from the amazing drum-only soundtrack to the fact that it was filmed in a single continuous shot. (I don’t entirely know what that means, but it sounds cool.)I also thought it was interesting that much of the coverage of the film at the Oscars said it was primarily a story about ego. I thought it was somewhat about ego, especially in the context of mortality as an actor who formerly played a superhero ages and faces the loss of relevancy and career. But I also thought it was about shame, a concept that isn’t often explored from a masculine perspective. It reminded me of reading Karl Ove Knausgaard, something else I'll write about shortly.

Review: Gulf Air Business Class A330 London To Bahrain

I don't think I've ever boarded a plane as "blind" as when I got on this Gulf Air flight. SeatGuru shows three configurations for Gulf Air's A330s, none of which matched the seatmap for my flight. Gulf Air's website barely even makes reference to their new business class product, which I assumed my flight would have.

I boarded through door 2L, where I was welcomed by one of the crew, who pointed me towards my seat.

Gulf Air's business class cabin consists of a total of 36 seats, spread across two identical cabins. Each cabin features a total of three rows in a 2-2-2 configuration -- one is before the main entry door, and one is behind the main entry door, and they're separated by the galley and lavatories.

I was the first passenger in the forward business class cabin, so took the opportunity to snap some pictures.

Is It Time to Regulate Frequent Flyer Programs?

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything as egregious as Delta over the past few weeks. Delta eliminated their award charts — just pulled them off the website — without telling anyone. When asked they said that members now get all they need to know from the award calendar. That suggests pricing could change and […]

IHG Rewards Club's PointBreaks promotion is traditionally one of the best promotions in the hotel industry. Through this promotion, select hotels are available for just 5,000 points per night. What Makes a Nomad a Nomad?

What makes a nomad a nomad? Or a backpacker a backpacker? How do you define a budget traveler? Am I a nomad because I move around a lot or did I give up the rights to call myself that when I got an apartment? Am I a luxury traveler because I stay in a hotels or a budget one because I use points to stay in them for free? I was faced with these questions last month when asked how […]

The Strangest Immigration Landing Card You’ve Ever Seen, and It’s Now Being Used.

The other day I entered Abu Dhabi briefly. Apparently additional security measures were in place for immigration, and the fast track queue took about 40 minutes — even though the line wasn’t particularly long. What was unique was they were insisting that everyone fill out landing cards. I don’t recall ever filling one of those […]

Three Days Only: Up To 50% Bonus On Purchase Of British Airways Avios

British Airways is offering what they call their "best ever bonus" on the purchase of Avios, available through 11:59PM GMT on Wednesday, February 25, 2015.

Through this promotion you'll earn a 50% bonus if you purchase 2,000 or more Avios, up to the annual limit of 35,000 Avios (not factoring in any bonus Avios). Purchased Avios should post immediately and are processed directly by British Airways, meaning they should qualify as airfare spend for the purpose of your credit card.

The cost per purchased Avios varies based on how many you purchase. For example, 15,000 Avios (including the 50% bonus) will cost you $300, which is 2.0 cents per Avios.
