One of the best hotel credit cards out there is the IHG Rewards Club Select credit card from Chase. Not only does it currently offer a 70,000 point sign-up bonus, but those points can also be used to book their all-inclusive resorts. Meanwhile, the card comes with an annual free night that can be used […]

Is Today The Worst Day Of The Year To Be An Elite Flyer?

Is today the worst day of the year to travel as an elite member... at least on American? Traditionally airline elite status expires at the end of February, so this is the time period where you have the most elite members flying. That's because even those that didn't requalify for status still have their 2014 status.

And it's Thursday afternoon, which is traditionally the most popular time for business travelers to be gracing the skies.

So does that make right now the busiest elite travel period of the year?

Marriott Plans to Start Expiring Points

As if it’s not enough that Marriott Rewards points will be worth less, Marriott has announced that points will expire after two years of account inactivity. These people seem so happy that their points can now expire! It’s been in the terms and conditions that Marriott points expire for years, as far back as I […]

Homestays: The Joys of Exchange

For travelers looking to immerse themselves in a destination’s traditions and ways of life, homestays are a perfect entry point. They are the very definition of local travel, getting visitors on the ground as soon as possible and plunging them into the deep end of a new place.

Loyalty 101: Choosing a Hotel Loyalty Program

Even novice travelers understand the value of loyalty programs. As a first-time traveler many years ago, I often dreamed about the perks that came with being a hotel elite, as well as redeeming points for free hotel rooms around the world. However, this aspiration is often never actualized by the uninitiated, as they often drop […]

Travel to Canada for the Women’s World Cup 2015

When FIFA brings the Women’s World Cup games to Canada this summer, they’ll present sports and travel fans with two awesome opportunities: watching American greats such as Alex Morgan and Former FIFA World Player of the Year Abby Wambach kick some butt—errr, we mean, soccer balls –and two, to check out two vibrant, dramatically diverse...

Marriott Announces Disastorous 2015 Award Category Changes

Yesterday, I wrote about Starwood’s 2015 award category changes. I ended that article by saying that Marriott (as well as Hilton) could learn a lot from Starwood and Hyatt about how hotel award category changes are done. Little did I know that less than 24-hours later, Marriott would be announcing their own award category changes. […]

New American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card Benefits

The American Express® Premier Rewards Gold Card is one of the first cards I ever signed up for, and I've kept it ever since.

Back in the day the card was really unique, as it offered 3x points on airfare purchased with airlines, 2x points on gas purchased at US gas stations & groceries purchased at US supermarkets. In addition to that the card used to offer 15,000 Membership Rewards points for any year in which you spent $30,000 on the card.

In other words, $30,000 of airfare spend per year would net you 105,000 Membership Rewards points, which is a crazy good return.

Unfortunately since then a couple of things have changed which have decreased the value proposition of the card:

Reader Request: Which No-Fee Card Has a Sign-Up Bonus and 0% APR?

This week’s reader request is a question I’m asked frequently: “What credit card can you recommend that has no annual fee, a good sign-up bonus and has a 0% interest rate for at least 12 months?” In browsing available travel rewards cards, they can typically be grouped into two distinct categories each with their own […]
