United Plans to Introduce Revenue-Based Redemptions This Year

Wandering Aramean notes that United plans to “begin introducing dynamic award pricing”. He quotes a United spokesperson as describing this as part of their strategy of “giving customers a broad set of redemption options” and the spokesperson also notes United’s “focus on ensuring saver-award availability in general” which seems to suggest that this would be […]

Review: Japan Airlines First Class Lounge Tokyo Narita Airport

I arrived from Jakarta at 6:25AM, and my connecting flight to New York was at 11:10AM, so I had a sizable layover.

I cleared transit security in no time and headed to the Japan Airlines First Class Lounge located in the main concourse, only to discover that it actually opens at 7:30AM, so I had about an hour to kill before I could use the lounge.

Admittedly I should have researched in advance (not that it would have changed anything in practice), but I do find it a bit odd that the lounge opens so much later than the first bank of arriving flights.

Current List of 50,000+ Point Credit Card Offers With Links

Recently, I had a conversation with a follower on Twitter who was looking for a few new credit cards. He lamented the lack of 50,000+ point credit card offers, especially since he had several cards in his wallet. With credit card issuers limiting the number of times a credit card bonus can be obtained within […]

How to Upgrade Your US Airways MasterCard to Aviator Silver

The US Airways Dividend Miles program has been folded into American AAdvantage. And technically now only Citibank has the right to issue new American AAdvantage personal (and small business) co-brand credit cards. Barclays used to issue the US Airways card. There’s still a working link to apply, don’t wait although my best guess is it […]

Inflight With Alaska Beyond

Last week, Alaska Airlines hosted an event in Seattle to highlight their refreshed inflight experience. This included a two hour joyride on one of their new 737s from Boeing Field, so I likely would have snuck on board had I not been invited. #AvgeekProblems

Living in Seattle, I fly on Alaska pretty regularly as an elite both up front and in back, so I wasn't sure what I was going to learn that I didn't already know, but they touted an in-flight Seattle International Film Festival screening, food from Tom Douglas (a renowned Seattle chef and restaurateur), and wine tasting.

The Cheapest I’ve Seen American Sell Miles

American will let you buy miles with up to a 60% bonus though April 30. Here’s the offer: Buying 100,000 miles gets you 160,000 for $3201.25 or 2 cents per mile. On average I value American miles at 1.7 cents. So I’m not really a buyer at 2 cents apiece. However, miles are worth more […]

Egypt Postpones Visa Requirement Changes

In mid-March I first posted about how Egypt would stop issuing visas on arrival to individual tourists as of May 2015.

The details were sparse at first, though within a week we found out the details of the new laws, which would require US citizens not traveling as part of a tour group to go to the embassy in advance to get a visa. This comes at the same time that Egypt is greatly trying to grow their number of tourists post-revolution, hoping for 20 million tourists per year by 2020.

I was pretty bummed about this change, since there are some amazing premium cabin fares originating in Cairo, so it's an airport I transit quite frequently. While the new visa requirement wouldn't have been the end of the world, it was certainly an annoyance I wasn't looking forward to dealing with.
