Travels With a Hospitality Career Consultant: On the Road with Kimberly Ramsawak

This is a traveler case study. (Read others or nominate yourself.) Tell us about yourself. I’m a career consultant specializing in the tourism and hospitality, and I’m a passionate advocate for people of color in this industry. A common misconception is that industry jobs are only available at hotels, airlines or agencies—with really low pay.…

Starwood Lets You Redeem Points for Luxury Concert Suites and Intimate Performances

I don't usually like using points for non-travel awards, but there are two exceptions--to keep points from expiring, and when there's the opportunity to use a big travel company or bank's contacts to get access to the kind of life events you can't possible set up on your own.

Starwood has a new set of experiences that you can use your points for starting this morning, including luxury suites at a series of venues and intimate concerts at their hotels. Definitely worth seeing if there's something that matches your interests, and you have my permission to use your Starpoints for something other than transfers to American, Alaska, or Japan Airlines miles....

TSA Pre-Check Will Finally Become More Selective!

Last August I wrote about how the TSA was planning on tightening up Pre-Check, and limiting it to those who have enrolled in a Trusted Traveler Program (TSA Pre-Check, Global Entry, NEXUS, etc.). As I explained at the time, roughly 45% of domestic passengers were getting Pre-Check, despite only a small minority of them having actually signed up for a Trusted Traveler Program.

From a safety perspective I don't have an issue with that, since I tend to think taking off your shoes and jacket, and taking out your laptop and liquids, is more security theater than anything else.

That being said, from a passenger experience perspective it really pisses me off, since most of the passengers that were getting Pre-Check didn't get how it worked, so slowed down the line substantially.

NYPD Officer (Sort Of) Apologizes To Uber Driver After Tirade

Last week I posted the insane video of the NYPD officer who abusively went off on an Uber driver:

You've gotta love that virtually everyone is a cameraman nowadays thanks to smartphones, so the interaction was caught on tape. Within days the officer was identified and even demoted due to his actions.

On top of that, it looks like over the weekend he appeared on a local New York City station to issue an apology... or something like that:
