Triple Points, Pilot and Co-Pilot Walk Into a Bar And… and Where to Find $600,000 in Change

Often there are great posts on other blogs worth being aware of. Folks are writing up deals that I may not have much to add to, so I share what you need to know that’s being discussed elsewhere and link to some interesting or unique news articles about travel, miles, and points.

Today we’ve got a (relatively) strong hotel bonus points promotion, two stories about the TSA, a pilot and co-pilot getting into a fight (not after walking into a bar..), and a country that seems to really 'get' tourism.

This Is What $65/Night Gets You In The Maldives

There's no pleasure without a bit of pain, and I think there aren't many better examples of that in the travel hobby than getting to the Maldives.

Let me tell you, the journey to the Maldives wasn't an easy one. I flew from New York to Hong Kong to Bangkok to Colombo to Male, getting in at 1:30AM.

Then at 7:30AM I had a flight on the local Maldivian airline to the airport closest to the Park Hyatt.

Realistically I couldn't make it to any hotel near Male Airport before 2AM, and I'd have to leave by 6:15AM to catch my domestic flight.

Grave of Daniel Boone in Frankfort, Kentucky

Grave of Daniel Boone

One of the archetypal American frontiersmen, Daniel Boone is buried in Frankfort Cemetery with his wife Rebecca on a high bluff overlooking Kentucky's capital city. However, people from Missouri, where Boone spent the last 20 years of his life, might have you believe otherwise.

Daniel Boone led one of the earliest waves of settlers into Kentucky County, then part of Virginia. His story was published by John Filson (with some embellishment) in 1784, which was then translated into various European languages, and establishing his myth in the new United States and the world. Failures in land speculating would lead to Boone relocating to present-day West Virginia and later Missouri to continue hunting and trapping until his death in 1820.

He was buried near Marthasville, Missouri just west of St. Louis, but in 1845 both Daniel's and Rebecca's bodies were disinterred and moved to Frankfort Cemetery. There is disagreement to this day as to whether the Boones' bodies are the proper ones, or if some are in Kentucky and some in Missouri.

Starwood Lets You Redeem Points for Luxury Concert Suites and Intimate Performances

I don't usually like using points for non-travel awards, but there are two exceptions--to keep points from expiring, and when there's the opportunity to use a big travel company or bank's contacts to get access to the kind of life events you can't possible set up on your own.

Starwood has a new set of experiences that you can use your points for starting this morning, including luxury suites at a series of venues and intimate concerts at their hotels. Definitely worth seeing if there's something that matches your interests, and you have my permission to use your Starpoints for something other than transfers to American, Alaska, or Japan Airlines miles....
