Fort Union National Monument in Watrous, New Mexico
A former bustling military fort that has lain undisturbed for 120 years still rests on the high prairie of New Mexico despite being made of soft adobe material.
In 1870 Fort Union was a major stop on the 1,200-mile Santa Fe trail, easily the home stretch for caravans starting in Missouri. The Civil War had officially ended but the “Union” army still occupied New Mexico's Fort Union, which was also a center of trade in addition to being a well-known military outpost. It was populated by a mix of soldiers, locals, travelers, and anyone else who had business on the Santa Fe Trail. This is of course until the railroads came.
The new speedier form of transportation bypassed the fort entirely, turning the once integral trading fort into a veritable ghost town. In a stretch of only 10 years, the fort was essentially left for dead, to bake and crumble under the New Mexico sun. Luckily, before the adobe walls could turn to dust, preservationists in the 1950s shored up the remains of the fort's structures, and the Fort Union National Monument was born.
Today Fort Union is essentially a ghost town just off an absolutely empty stretch of Route 25 between Las Vegas and Raton. It has two rows of adobe ruins, some old cannons and farming equipment, and wagon ruts in the ground where the Santa Fe trail once ran. Standing in the middle of this empty plain, it’s almost impossible to imagine a thriving military/civilian/commercial village having existed here, which is a major part of Fort Union’s charm.

Review: United’s Streaming In-Flight Entertainment
We flew United recently for a long weekend trip to visit the grandparents. The flight there was completely uneventful, but the trip home was on one of the A320s that has the new onboard streaming IFE.
I’ve had mixed feelings about the move to replace screens with content that you can stream to your personal device. On one hand, the tech geek in me loves the concept -- it’s just flat out cool. Of course it also saves weight, and weight is fuel, and fuel is money so the airlines like it. I get that too.
But I’m also fearful that this is just another "nickel and dime" opportunity for the airlines. I’m not a fan of having to pay for something (entertainment) that I used to get for free. And what happens to those without devices or those who can’t figure out how to get them to work?

The End of Lifetime Star Alliance Gold Disaster is Confirmed, Here’s What to Expect from a New Program
A couple of days ago I shared that it appeared Aegean Airlines Gold status would no longer be for life. The full details are out, and I — and many others — are about to get one last year of Star Alliance Gold status. This is a big deal because it was the easiest Star […]

Aegean Lifetime Star Alliance Gold Ending
You've gotta love airline alliances and the arbitrage opportunities that exist thanks to their unique programs. For example, I was a top tier elite member with British Midland (bmi) for five years before I actually flew with them. I was actually sort of convinced they weren't a real airline for a long time. And I'd speculate that a majority of bmi's top tier elite members had never actually flown with them.
Since joining the Star Alliance in 2012, one of the greatest Star Alliance frequent flyer programs has been Aegean, the Greek airline with a fleet of 30 narrowbody aircraft.
For one, Aegean had extremely reasonable requirements to achieve Star Alliance Gold status to begin with. You needed just 20,000 elite qualifying miles to achieve top tier status with them, and they'd give you 1,000 elite qualifying miles just for signing up. So in reality you needed just 19,000 miles to qualify.

Emirates A380 First Class Award Space Wide Open This Winter – Act Fast!
The easiest way to search for award space is with the Alaska Airlines website, since Alaska is a partner of Emirates and allows searching their space online. They also show an award calendar. Historically they have only shown a subset of the space that Emirates makes available. Expertflyer shows space, at least as offered to […]

Virgin Australia New Business Class Unveiled
Today Virgin Australia revealed their brand new business class product, which they'll offer through their Airbus A330 and Boeing 777 fleet by early 2016.
It looks like their new product will consist of reverse herringbone seats, which are my favorite type of business class hard product. Here's how they describe the new business class suites:
"The revolutionary Business Class suites, which convert into 80 inch lie-flat beds, represent a major enhancement to the travel experience on board Virgin Australia’s Airbus A330 and Boeing 777 aircraft and the first major product innovation to be announced under the airline’s new three-year strategy, Virgin Vision 2017."
