EVA Air Limiting Business Class Partner Award Space

Last summer EVA Air joined the Star Alliance, which was extremely exciting news. They have a fantastic business class product, Hello Kitty jets, and at the time released a ton of business class award space. This trend seems to be pretty common among airlines when they join alliances.

For many non-aligned airlines, award availability is often excellent, given that they don't have that many members redeeming miles. For non-US airlines, loyalty programs are usually actually about creating loyalty, as opposed to massive businesses in and of themselves.

There's a trend we often see among airlines that join alliances -- they release a ton of premium cabin award space when they first join, and once they get a better sense of alliances they drastically reduce the amount of award space they release, realizing how many more miles members of partner airlines have.

American Express Eliminated Online Message Customer Support

I like doing customer service with credit card companies online, in writing. I don’t like calling. I don’t really like the phone anyway, it’s more of an intrusion. I prefer to compose my thoughts clearly and crisply, and not have to wait in real-time for the company to respond, to transfer me around, to re-explain […]

Trip Review: Carnival Sensation to Nassau

After writing about how to book a cruise with credit card rewards a few months ago, my husband and I decided to take our two kids on a cruise of our own. And I was totally skeptical. After all, I don’t like boats, the open ocean, waves, or tsunamis, and I’ve seen the Poseidon Adventure […]

Rock Carvings in Tanum in Tanumshede, Sweden

Rock Carvings in Tanum

Contained on hundreds of stone and boulder faces the archeological site known unimaginatively as the Rock Carvings in Tanum are some of the most complex and skilled Bronze Age carvings anywhere in the world, and you can't miss them since they have been painted a bright red for clarity, if not scientific preservation.

Consisting of thousands of figures, animals, and other illustrations shallowly carved into the rock, the etchings are remarkable not only for their breadth of variation and clarity, but also for their continuity. The earliest of the designs appear to date back to around 1800 BCE detailing little moments of daily life and seafaring as the local people were known for. It seems that people continued returning to the site for hundreds of years to record figures, religious symbols, and other iconography that may have been one part historical record, and one part pure art. The site saw new carvings being created almost right up until the birth of Christ, creating a staggeringly insightful look at late Bronze Age life.

While the Rock Carvings in Tanum are a treasure trove of archeological gold, their breadth and number have made the site popular among casual tourists as well. Since the carvings themselves have aged into little more than shallow depressions in the stone, many of them have been colored in with red paint to make them pop for the casual visitor. Unfortunately this was done with no regard to their preservation or scientific significance. However the site is now protected by UNESCO, so hopefully no more color happy tour guides will get any bright ideas.
