America is Testing Exit Controls at the Border

In most countries you go through immigration not just when you arrive, but when you leave too. In the US there are no ‘exit controls.’ When you go to the airport you get off a connecting flight and right onto your international flight, no more security and no immigration. Domestic and international flights leave from […]

Weekly Review: March 21, 2015

Hello from San Diego, where it's a chilly 70 degrees! ;)

I'm in California this week for the opening of the new Emirates lounge at LAX, and eventually have to figure out how I'm getting to the Maldives, but it's been such a fun week of news and deals that I haven't spent time on anything else. As a matter of fact, I can count on one hand the number of times I've changed out of my American Airlines pajamas this week.

Shaming Tourists, a Weird 787 Route, and Margaret Cho Denied Pre-Boarding

News and notes from around the interweb: TSA PreCheck is an important idea – risk-based security, focusing resources where there’s a greater chance of a threat. It’s why TSA as an acronym for ‘Taking Scissors Away’ is such a problem, because it distracts the agency from looking for actually dangerous items. When the TSA lets […]

Benefits Of Having Dual Citizenship (And Two Passports)!

Reader Jim asked the following question on the "Ask Lucky" page of the blog, which I figured I'd answer here, given that I get a lot of questions about my dual citizenship:

Big fan of your blog. My questions is about dual citizenship and traveling with two passports. You mentioned that you travel with your German passport. What are some advantages and disadvantages of having two passports? When and where would you use a passport from the EU as opposed to US?

I was born in the US but both of my parents are from Germany, so I'm incredibly fortunate to be able to have dual citizenship. In a way, I'd consider my passports to almost be my two most valuable "elite statuses," given how much time and money they save me.

A beginner's guide to 'Urdlish'

"Since 1608, when England first set up the British East India Company, Pakistanis have been appropriating English. By the time Pakistan became a country in 1947, it was declared one of the country's two official tongues. Since then, we've gotten pretty creative with the Queen’s English."

She Caused a Disruption *After* Her Onboard Sex Act

Alright, crazy passenger stories happen at least somewhat regularly. A woman flying British Airways from Kingston, Jamaica to London Gatwick “was arrested on suspicion of being drunk on an aircraft” which I did not realize was even a crime. (“I’m glad to have never been arrested, then” half the people reading this think to themselves.) […]

Cute Snowy Seal

Animal Photos This last year I’ve taken more animal photos than ever before! I quite like it… I like it much more than I thought I would. Maybe I thought it would be boring or too difficult or something. I don’t know what I was worried about. As usual, the worries didn’t add up to […]

The Most Epic Airport Meltdown I’ve Ever Seen

There's nothing I love more than a video of a good airport meltdown by a passenger, especially when it's a "DYKWIA" situation.

Reader Michelle sent along a link to what might just be the most epic DYKWIA airport meltdown ever. This took place in early 2013 at Kunming Changshui International Airport in China, after a man showed up too late for his flight. I can't believe I hadn't heard about this until now, given that it's over two years old!
